Boat smart

Use common sense

When on the water, remember you are sharing it with others. Keep a sharp lookout for boats, skiers and other hazards. A little common sense goes a long way. Before heading offshore, ask yourself:

* Are weather conditions safe?

* Is there at least one personal flotation device (life jacket) for every person on board?

* Am I overloading the boat?

* Is emergency gear (fire extinguisher, bailer, paddle, anchor and line, signaling device, tool kit, first aid kit, etc.) in place?

* Is the steering system working smoothly and properly?

* Is the battery fully charged and are the cable terminals clean and tight?

* Does the fuel system have adequate fuel - are there leaks or fumes?

* Is the engine in neutral?

* Is all electrical equipment (lights, horn, pump, etc.) working?

A long day on the water causes fatigue. The motion, sound and glare can reduce your reflexes to about the same level as someone who is legally intoxicated. Take breaks and slow down at the end of the day.
