Springs nails public's tail to the wall

Published October 3, 2003

Editor: That exclusive group, the residents/officials/managers/employees from Weeki Wachee must have had Tallahassee training. They have the audacity to promote a "Save Our Tails" program while striving to nail everyone else's tail to the wall.

And all the while, they proclaim it's for the benefit of the county. Does this not sound like the recent telephone legislation delivered by our servants in the Capitol?

The springs are a valuable asset to Hernando, and I would like very much to see the attraction survive but not under Enron-type management.

Employees should already know right from wrong

Re: Hernando weighs ethics training, Sept. 30 Times.

Editor: When I read articles like this, I ask myself what kind of people we have representing us.

I really do know the answer to that question, but if I include it in this letter, I realize there's no chance you would consider printing it.

My question to any employer who is considering hiring someone: Would you employ anyone who you feel is unethical? All these years, I guess, I've been under the apparently false impression that our parents were the people who instilled, or tried to instill, in us the difference between right and wrong. If not them, the church we went to tried every Sunday morning.

Let's be honest, any person with average or even below-average intelligence knows in his or her heart and mind what is right and what is wrong. In a study done not too long ago concerning monkeys, it was found that even they have a sense of what is just and what is not. Sometimes I have wondered where we stand in the evolutionary line. Are we ahead or behind them?

When any of our elected officials, or for that matter any of us, do something that is unethical, they and we know it. The reason we do it is very simple and basic; we do these things for some type of personal gain, financial or otherwise. With all the rules and regulations we have covering all jobs, from the janitor to the president of a corporation, each of us know what we should do and what we should not. Let's stop kidding ourselves.

If someone has to teach an adult what is right or wrong, it's too late. Next applicant please.

DayStar Center might survive with county's help

Re: DayStar Hope closes this fall after 20 years, Sept. 25 Times.

Editor: I was saddened when I read about DayStar Hope Center on U.S. 19 closing down because it doesn't pay to stay open any more. Frank Bierweiler had a good idea when he started that place. Maybe the Hernando County Commission can intervene and give the center a couple of million dollars.

It also might help if DayStar didn't charge so much for certain things, like used refrigerators and televisions. However, I got a refrigerator from there about eight years ago, and it's still going. You'd be surprised what you can find at DayStar. The trick is to be there early because the good things fly out the door quickly.

So many businesses are getting assistance these days, why not charitable institutions? It's not like DayStar is privately owned to turn a profit.

In the meantime, I'd like to thank Bierweiler, the former spokesman for the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, for all his efforts in helping the downtrodden in our community. Also, I pray for his health. I have a friend who has multiple sclerosis so badly she can't move a muscle. I know what that's all about.
