Rout earns Germans a shot at Americans

PORTLAND, Ore. - Germany scored three goals in a five-minute span of the second half on Thursday to rout Russia 7-1 in the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup.

The Germans, who have outscored opponents 20-3 and are 4-0 in the World Cup, play the United States in a semifinal Sunday at Portland's PGE Park.

Birgit Prinz and Kerstin Garefrekes each scored twice for Germany, which had six second-half goals.

Sandra Minnert began the flurry with a header off a corner kick to make it 2-0 in the 57th minute. Pia Wunderlich scored on a feed from Prinz in the 60th minute, and Garefrekes made it 4-0 two minutes later.

Prinz scored her fifth World Cup goal in the 81st minute and, after Garefrekes scored again, added her sixth in the 89th minute.

CANADA 1, CHINA 0: Charmaine Hooper scored early and Canada advanced to play Sweden in the other semifinal.

OLYMPICS: Gardner nears berth

Olympic champion Rulon Gardner won his first two matches at the Greco-Roman World Championships in Creteil, France, and moved within a victory of a berth in the 2004 Athens Games. Gardner dominated Sweden's Eddy Bengtsson 4-0 in his opening 2641/2-pound match then overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat Israel's Uri Yusiechik 5-2. Gardner faces Russian Khassan Baroev in today's knockout rounds.

TRACK AND FIELD: Track's world governing body sent a letter to USA Track & Field asking for documents to explain why Jerome Young was cleared to run in the 2000 Olympics despite a positive drug test a year earlier.

NBA: Accuser won't testify

The woman who accused Kobe Bryant of rape will not have to testify during the Lakers guard's preliminary hearing next week, Judge Frederick Gannett ruled. The judge also said the hearing Thursday will be open to the public, a decision that could prompt Bryant's defense team to waive the hearing and go straight to trial. Meanwhile, Bryant did not travel with the team to Honolulu for training camp, and team officials said he was "under the weather."

TENNIS: Gibson remembered

Althea Gibson was eulogized as an inspiration to people of all races, on the court and off. Gibson, who won 11 Grand Slam titles, helped pave the way for later stars such as Arthur Ashe and Venus and Serena Williams. Among those in attendance in Newark, N.J., was 1990 Wimbledon finalist Zina Garrison. "You broke down the doors for me and so many others," Garrison said. "Althea, I love you." Gibson died Sunday of respiratory failure at 76.

KREMLIN CUP: Two-time major-champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov lost to unseeded Sargis Sargsian in the second round, and American Taylor Dent advanced.

COLLEGE SOCCER: Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Berbert set a school record with her fifth shutout as the Tampa women defeated visiting Florida Southern 3-0.

BOXING: Promoter Bob Arum won't have to answer for allegations of impropriety he made after Oscar De La Hoya's controversial loss to Shane Mosley. The Nevada Athletic Commission excused Arum after he apologized.
