LAND O'LAKES - Belk, the department store known for its brand name clothing, china and cosmetics, will open as early as next year at Collier Commons shopping center in Land O'Lakes.

Belk's Hernando County store confirmed the company will build beside the Publix supermarket in the recently opened shopping center northwest of Collier Parkway and State Road 54.

Belk operates about 200 stores in 13 states in the southeastern United States. Better known for anchoring regional malls, Belk has branched into building stand-alone stores in neighborhood shopping centers.

In 2000, it opened a 58,000-square-foot store in Coastal Way, a shopping center at Cortez and Mariner boulevards in Spring Hill.

The company has avoided Florida's larger cities, Jacksonville being the big exception. Its 19 stores in the state include those in Lakeland, Ocala, Crystal River, Lake City and Leesburg.

Headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., Belk sells top name brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Levi's, Ralph Lauren and Estee Lauder. The chain's target customers are fashion-conscious women aged 30-55.

Belk will be the second large store to anchor Collier Commons, which opened with Publix in July. A mound of dirt west of the supermarket is where the department store will be.

Since July, Collier Commons tenants have announced left and right.

Walgreens drugstore and Blockbuster video already have opened.

Coming soon are a Chili's Tex-Mex restaurant, a Sonic drive-in burger joint, AmSouth Bank and a 252-unit apartment complex.
