TALLAHASSEE - House Speaker Johnnie Byrd said Friday he has raised more than $800,000 in his race for the U.S. Senate in less than three months.

That would quickly put the Plant City Republican within striking distance of another Senate hopeful, former U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum of Longwood, who has raised $1.1-million since he got into the race last March.

"We did over $800,000," Byrd said. "I think we've established that we could be a leading candidate in the race. Now we can move forward. We're excited."

McCollum raised about $500,000 in the same three-month period, spokeswoman Shannon Gravitte said Friday.

Another Republican candidate, state Sen. Daniel Webster of Winter Garden, collected about $175,000 in the quarter than ended Sept. 30, spokeswoman Kathy Mears said. Webster did not enter the race until the first week of September. Byrd entered the race in mid July.

Two men were in each car when they started firing at each other, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said. One man died at the scene while the wounded men left the scene in one of the cars.
