CUSA: Backups have big day for TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas - Brandon Hassell filled in nicely for TCU, keeping the Horned Frogs unbeaten in his three starts for injured quarterback Tye Gunn.

Hassell threw two touchdowns, including a 40-yard strike to Bruce Galbert to start the second half Saturday night, and the Horned Frogs beat Army 27-0. Like Gunn, he is undefeated as a starter.

Freshman Robert Merrill had his third straight 100-yard rushing game for the Horned Frogs since replacing injured tailback Lonta Hobbs. Tyrone Sanders returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown.

Gunn played for the first time since separating his right (throwing) shoulder in practice Sept. 9 and could return as the starter Friday night at South Florida.

UAB 24, MEMPHIS 10: Darrell Hackney threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns as visiting Alabama-Birmingham built an early lead and snapped a three-game skid.

A fourth-quarter TD from Hackney to Nick Coon for 57 yards sealed the win. Hackney, who was 14-of-28, hit the receiver in stride at the Tiger 15 for the game's final points.

Memphis' potential scoring drive in the fourth was erased on a fumble by receiver Maurice Avery, who otherwise had a big day with a school-record 13 receptions.

S. MISS. 22, CINCINNATI 20: Darren McCaleb kicked three field goals, including the winning 26-yarder with 1:10 left, to rally the visiting Golden Eagles.

Southern Mississippi trailed 20-6 early in the second quarter before coming back.

John Eubanks started the rally with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Bearcats quarterback Gino Guidugli strained a ligament in his left knee in the fourth quarter and sat out two series. He returned for the final possession, but Trevis Coley intercepted him with 22 seconds left.
