Rave: 'Canes steal Bulls' rightful spotlight

By PETE YOUNG
Published October 5, 2003

Countryside High graduate Jon Peattie, who cracked a 57-yard field goal in high school, on Thursday proved to be as accurate and composed as he is powerful.

With the Miami Hurricanes bumbling toward a stunning home loss, Peattie helped the 'Canes snatch victory from defeat. He booted his fifth field goal of the game with 11 seconds to go to salvage a 22-20 win over West Virginia at the Orange Bowl.

Congratulations to Peattie, but it's a shame Miami pulled it out for one reason: It denied South Florida a weekend in the spotlight.

Had the 'Canes lost, USF, with 20 straight wins at Raymond James Stadium heading into Saturday night's game against unbeaten Louisville, would have had the nation's longest home winning streak among Division I-A schools.

That is amazing: Twenty straight wins at home for a team that didn't start playing until 1997.

From scratch the Bulls have microwaved a program, going from nonexistence to Division I-A to their first season in Conference USA in seven seasons. And winning every step of the way, with a 46-23 record entering the Louisville game.

Creating a top-flight I-A college football program is a monumental task, yet USF is doing it at warp speed. The Bulls are right there, on the brink of becoming everything they had envisioned.

Rant: Please, no more Rush, BCS or Titleist

Rush Limbaugh - kidding! Who can bear to read another word on that matter? Or, for the time being, on these matters, the list of things in sports that just won't go away:

Long-suffering Red Sox fans (is there any other kind?)

The BCS, that #$#@^% #&^# *$^%@#!!! Give us a playoff!

Anna Kournikova never winning a singles tournament, and it being pointed out by someone every time her name is mentioned, which is often.

The Devil Rays' unwillingness to spend money, and their inability to spend wisely.

Chris Rix's foibles, be they decisionmaking, oversleeping, illegally parking, shamelessly self-promoting -

Tiger Woods' choice of driver manufacturer. Titleist. Nike. Titleist. Nike. Duck season. Rabbit season. Duck season -

Speaking of Ducks, Oregon's uniforms. Blech.

Playmakers.

The uproar about Playmakers.

Misbehaving college football coaches, especially those who then try to sue the school that rightly fired them for millions of dollars.

Terrell Owens' hissy fits.

Kobe's trial.
