Islanders finish perfect preseason

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Mariusz Czerkawski and Michael Peca each had a goal and an assist and Rick DiPietro made 24 saves and had an assist as the Islanders beat the Devils 5-1 Saturday night to remain unbeaten in the preseason.

Oleg Kvasha, Mark Parrish and Jason Blake also scored for the Islanders, who finished the preseason 7-0-0.

Martin Brodeur turned aside 21 shots for the Stanley Cup champion Devils (3-5-0-1).

New York took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Czerkawski and Blake. The teams traded power-play goals in a 2:14 span late in the second period, with Jiri Bicek scoring for New Jersey and Peca answering for New York. DiPietro assisted on Peca's goal.

Kvasha's wrist shot 58 seconds into the third period sealed New York's perfect preseason.

CANADIENS 1, SENATORS 1: Michael Ryder scored in the third to lift visiting Montreal into a tie in both team's preseason finale. Ryder, in a bid to make his debut with Montreal against Ottawa on Thursday, led the Canadiens with five points in seven preseason games.

HURRICANES 3, CAPITALS 1: Eric Staal scored his seventh goal of the preseason and former Lightning goalie Kevin Weekes stopped 17 shots for host Carolina.

PREDATORS 5, BLUES 1: David Legwand and Andreas Johansson each had a goal and an assist to lead host Nashville. The Predators struck three times in the second period, with goals from Scott Hartnell, Johansson and Adam Hall.

SABRES 4, BLUE JACKETS 1: Daniel Briere scored twice and Ryan Miller made 16 saves to lead host Buffalo. Forward Miroslav Satan, playing in his first preseason game since signing a two-year contract Monday, had a goal and an assist. Sabres forward Jochen Hecht broke his left arm and will be sidelined for up to two months.

RANGERS 2, BRUINS 1: Petr Nedved and Martin Rucinsky each scored for visiting New York. Defenseman Jeff Jillson scored Boston's goal. Rangers goaltender Mike Dunham had 27 saves, including 12 in the second period.

MAPLE LEAFS 1, RED WINGS 1: Ed Belfour stopped 40 shots for Toronto and Dominik Hasek blocked 23 for Detroit. Pavel Datsyuk scored for host Detroit and Mikael Renberg got the goal for Toronto. The teams wrap up the preseason tonight in Toronto.

BLACKHAWKS 4, STARS 2: Tyler Arnason and Anton Babchuk each scored a power-play goal in the first period to lead visiting Chicago. Stars left wing Brenden Morrow left after injuring his left leg 1:13 into the game when he was hit just above the ankle by the puck. He'll be evaluated on Monday and is day to day.

FLAMES 2, OILERS 1: Jarome Iginla scored with 19.5 seconds left in the third period for visiting Calgary. He took a cross-ice pass from Craig Conroy and put a shot past Tommy Salo for his fourth preseason goal.

Around the league

PANTHERS: Left wing Jonas Hoglund was waived. Signed last month, he had 13 goals and 19 assists for Toronto last season. The Panthers also sent five to AHL San Antonio: left wing Gregory Campbell, right wing Juraj Kolnik, center Vaclav Nedorost and defensemen Lukas Krajicek and Jeff Paul.

WILD: Marian Gaborik probably will miss the season opener Wednesday at Chicago because of a contract dispute, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.
