Apology made after coach is hit

RENO, Nev. - Nevada's president apologized after a fan was arrested on suspicion of throwing an object that hit UNLV coach John Robinson in the head at halftime.

Robinson was not seriously injured and returned to coach the Rebels to a 16-12 victory Saturday, their fourth in a row.

Robinson said he believed he was hit by a plastic water bottle as the team left the field. But campus police said they had conflicting reports from witnesses.

"We found a plastic beer bottle, but other witnesses said it was a beer can," said Adam Garcia of the University Police Services.

Nevada president John Lilley said he apologized to UNLV president Carol Harter during the second half.

"This is an unfortunate act that mars an otherwise great night of competition on the field," Lilley said in a statement released by the school.

"We do not tolerate this kind of criminal behavior. We offer our sincere apologies to Coach Robinson."

Kevan Old, 31, was booked into the Washoe County jail Saturday night on a charge of battery, campus police said. He was released after posting bail.

UCF: Quarterback Ryan Schneider, who injured his right shoulder Saturday, will be a game-time decision Saturday against Ohio.

ALABAMA: Redshirt freshman Brandon Avalos and freshman walk-on Mike Machen are the only healthy quarterbacks. Spencer Pennington separated his shoulder during the 37-23 loss to Georgia.

Brodie Croyle entered the game with a separated shoulder. He lasted two plays before taking a jarring hit with the Tide trailing 30-3. Coach Mike Shula said there's a chance Croyle could start Saturday if he gets enough repetitions in practice.

Meanwhile, guard Atlas Herrion's status is uncertain after he sustained a head injury during an extra point. And Shula said linebacker Demeco Ryans played most of the game with an unspecified injury.

AUBURN: Defensive back Carlos Rogers had surgery to repair a broken left thumb but expects to play Saturday. Also, tailback Ronnie Brown strained a hamstring Saturday but said he could have returned if needed.

UCF: Quarterback Ryan Schneider, who injured his right shoulder Sept. 27 against Kent State, will be a game-time decision Saturday against Ohio.

HOMECOMING RIOT: Police arrested 45 students during an alcohol-fueled riot in the streets after Minnesota State-Mankato lost its homecoming game 20-9 to North Dakota State. At least 2,000 students gathered in a largely student residential area, some setting fire to trash bins, tearing down fences, smashing car windows and throwing rocks and bricks at police. Jim Franklin, the public safety director, said four officers were injured.

OBITUARY: Bobby Cox, a former quarterback at Minnesota, died of pancreatic cancer. He was 69. He led the Golden Gophers to a 6-1-2 record and a No. 12 ranking in the final AP poll in 1956. He was on the Nov. 4, 1957, cover of Sports Illustrated next to a caption that read, "Bobby Cox of Minnesota: Best College Quarterback."

Red Raider throws 8 TDs

LUBBOCK, Texas - B.J. Symons threw a Big 12-record eight touchdowns and topped 500 yards for the third consecutive game as Texas Tech beat Texas A&M 59-28 late Saturday.

Symons, who was 34-for-46 for 505 yards, broke the conference mark of seven touchdowns set by A&M's Dustin Long last season in Tech's 48-47 overtime victory. Symons, who left the game with 11:48 remaining, threw touchdowns of 17, 19, 48, 13, 14, 15, 8 and 16 yards.

It was the third consecutive week Symons has broken a Big 12 record. He passed for 661 yards and six touchdowns in a 49-45 victory Sept. 27 at Mississippi, breaking the mark of 586 yards he set the week before in a 49-21 loss at North Carolina State.

His 1,752 passing yards are 47 short of the NCAA three-game record. Houston's David Klingler threw for 1,798 in 1990-91.
