TEMPE, Ariz. - NFL career rushing leader Emmitt Smith has a broken left shoulder blade and is out indefinitely.

The injury happened Sunday in the second quarter of Arizona's 24-7 loss at Dallas when he was tackled by Roy Williams.

Coach Dave McGinnis said X-rays taken Monday revealed the injury was more serious than thought. The Cardinals at first said Smith had only a sprained shoulder.

Team orthopedist Russell Chick found a break to the scapula in the back of Smith's shoulder.

BILLS: Receiver Eric Moulds was walking slowly and stiffly on a strained groin and his status for Sunday's game against the Jets remained uncertain.

BRONCOS: The team released safety Lee Flowers a week after he returned from a four-game suspension for failing a drug test. ... Defensive tackle Daryl Gardener was released from a hospital after spending most of the weekend there with strep throat. Gardener has been out all season after wrist surgery.

COWBOYS: Rookie tight end Jason Witten had surgery on his broken jaw. He is "very doubtful" for Sunday's game against Philadelphia, coach Bill Parcells said.

DOLPHINS: Linebacker Junior Seau, signed in the offseason from the Chargers, has a strained left hamstring and is questionable for Sunday's game at Jacksonville.

EAGLES: Pro Bowl guard Jermane Mayberry left in the first quarter Sunday after aggravating an elbow injury and didn't return.

FALCONS: Injured quarterback Michael Vick said he was in too much pain to jog, a goal he set last week. Trainer Ron Medlin said Vick was only able to do quick treadmill walking Saturday.

GIANTS: Tight end Jeremy Shockey criticized fans who left a 23-10 loss to Miami early. "Give up on us if you want to," said Shockey, who tied his career best with 11 catches for 110 yards. "If you want to leave, leave! Leave the game! Don't even come to the game! Give your tickets away! ... We have great fans, don't get me wrong. We have the best fans in the world, when we are doing things right." ... Kicker Matt Bryant will miss 3-4 weeks with a pulled hamstring in his right (kicking) leg. Coach Jim Fassel said the team would give five kickers a tryout.

JETS: Quarterback Chad Pennington threw Monday for the first time since being injured in a preseason game. "I'm very giddy and very excited just to be out with the team again, putting on a green-and-white jersey," he said.

PANTHERS: The league fined defensive back Jarrod Cooper more than a third of his pretax earnings after his arrest last month. He was arrested Sept.16 in Charlotte. Among his many charges: DWI and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

RAVENS: Receiver Dedric Ward signed a one-year contract. Cornerback Alvin Porter was waived to make room.

REDSKINS: Tight end Byron Chamberlain signed a week after he was cut by Minnesota after returning out of shape from a drug suspension. To make room, tight end Zeron Flemister was released.

TITANS: Cornerback Samari Rolle will miss 3-6 weeks with a broken and dislocated left elbow. Rolle was hurt on New England's opening drive.
