Media play the race card

By Letter to the editor
Published October 8, 2003

Re: He's still no Howard Cosell, editorial, Oct. 3.

The Times was right when it said most football fans look at Donovan McNabb and see a quarterback. You are wrong, however, to blame Rush Limbaugh for seeing a black quarterback.

The Times and its sports columnists are the guilty parties!

You publish the stories counting the number - or lack of - black quarterbacks. You look at football coaches by color as does the NFL, which requires teams to interview black prospective coaches.

Your baseball writers count the number of black managers and write stories about the need for more blacks. You look at hockey players and lament that more blacks aren't in the NHL.

When it comes to playing the race card, the Times and other media outlets lead the league. So let up on the holier-than-thou attitude. The Times and the media, in general, are not in a position to cast the first stone.
