MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Phillies pitcher Vincente Padilla was involved in a car accident in which his driver was killed during a trip to the player's hometown.

Padilla said X-rays revealed he sustained minor injuries in the crash Thursday night. The director of the hospital where Padilla was treated originally said the right-hander, 26, broke his collarbone and a pitching finger.

The driver, Abrahan Flores, fell asleep and the car careened off the highway and rolled, police said.

GOMES STARS: Rays outfielder Jonny Gomes went 3-for-4 with a homer to lead the Arizona Fall League Mesa Solar Sox to an 8-2 win over the 2003 USA Baseball Olympic Qualifying Team in an exhibition.

METS: Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker, a former New York assistant GM, reportedly will interview for the GM job.

OBITUARY: Steve Gruwell, who signed Jim Edmonds while working as a scout for the Angels, died Thursday in Anaheim, Calif., after complications from kidney failure. He was 62.
