TAMPA - The 22-year-old man who attacked another man convicted of raping him 11 years ago was charged with felony battery Friday, a day after the fight.
Hillsborough deputies said Jason Edward Flores attacked 31-year-old Kevin Kinder on Thursday when the two were placed in the same holding cell at a county jail about 5:30 a.m.
Flores and Kinder were in a room along with some 60 other inmates at the Orient Road Jail waiting to be transported to the Tampa courthouse, said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter. The men were not handcuffed.
Kinder, 31, had been brought down from Jackson Correctional Institution in Malone, Fla., where he is serving a 60-year prison term after being convicted in August of violating his probation on sex charges. He was scheduled for a hearing before a Hillsborough judge to correct a "scrivener's error" in his sentencing papers that gave him too much credit for time served.
Flores, who was arrested in August, was scheduled to be arraigned on charges of burglary, grand theft motor vehicle and resisting a law officer without violence.
The Sheriff's Office said Flores appeared to have started the fight.
A Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said there was nothing on either man's file to indicate that the two inmates should have been kept apart. Both men were examined by a nurse at the jail and deemed okay.
Kinder pleaded guilty in 1992 to performing lewd acts on four boys ages 11 to 14, one of them involving Flores. Kinder served just six years of a 17-year prison sentence because of prison crowding, but the state held him under the Jimmy Ryce Act until 2001.
Both men remained in custody on Friday night. But jail records showed that Kinder had been moved to the Falkenberg Road jail.
