Sideline

What a week!

By Times Staff Writer
Published October 12, 2003

On Monday, the Bucs squandered a 21-point lead with less than four minutes left against the Colts to lose 38-35 in overtime.

On Tuesday, Pro Bowl fullback Mike Alstott was put on injured reserve with a season-ending neck injury.

On Wednesday, Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington called out Warren Sapp, saying he would not take kindly to Sapp skipping through the Redskins' pregame stretching and calling it "disrespectful" that Sapp occasionally lines up at tight end.

On Thursday, cornerback Tim Wansley, expected to start in place of injured Brian Kelly, was late to a team meeting, prompting coaches to shuffle the depleted secondary.

And this was a short week!

GOT A HANKY?

The Bucs and Redskins are the most penalized teams in the league. The Bucs have been flagged for the most yards, 466. The Redskins have been committed the most violations, 55.

NUMBERS GAME

7: sacks by the Bucs.

9.3: league average for sacks.

19: sacks allowed by the Redskins

SMALL WORLD

Bucs quarterback Brad Johnson faces his former team, the Redskins, for the first time. Johnson passed for a career-high 4,005 yards and earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 1999, his first season with the 'Skins.

OFF LIMITS

No self-respecting Bucs fan would be caught dead cheering for the ol' ball coach today. Yes, Steve Spurrier was the Bucs' first quarterback. Yes, he won the Heisman Trophy at the University of Florida and coached the Gators to a national championship. But you can't have it both ways.

THE LAST WORD

"I like his style of coaching. I obviously like those head coaches that call the plays and run the offense. And he shows a little emotion on the sideline." - Spurrier on Bucs coach Jon Gruden.
