A national campaign to lighten student backpacks might appear to be a ploy of homework dodgers everywhere were it not spearheaded by the American Occupational Therapy Association. For the second year, the group is urging schools and communities to conduct weigh-ins of students and their backpacks to learn which students are toting more than the recommended 15 percent of their body weight. Several recent studies have suggested a connection between backpack weight and back pain and injury in children and teens. According to the AOTA, the backpack of a typical 100-pound student carries 20 percent of his or her body weight. The AOTA offers guidelines on its Web site (www.aota.org/backpack) for parents, teachers and weigh-in organizers. The site also lists ergonomic strategies for backpack users, such as pulling a rolling backpack.
