TAMPA - The Hillsborough County school district has received a $1-million safety grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The grant, the largest in the nation, will be used to buy cardiac defibrillators, radio communication systems for school security officers and panic bars for some schools. The money also will go for crisis management training.
The grant is part of the department's Emergency Response and Crisis Management Program.
The district's grant exceeds the next-highest award, to the New York City Department of Education, by more than $100,000. Seven Florida school districts received a total of $3,339,839 from the initiative.
