This week's games: Pinellas

LARGO (5-1) AT DIXIE HOLLINS (5-1)

By Times staff writers
Published October 16, 2003

LAST MEETING: Largo 21, Dixie Hollins 0 (2002).

THE SKINNY: Both teams lost to Dunedin, so this game could decide the runner-up spot in Class 4A, District 9. Dixie is healthy after resting several injured starters last week, including its entire offensive backfield. Having their offense at full strength should help the Rebels move the ball against a Largo defense that is fourth-worst against the run. The Packers, though, can counter with the passing of Fred Marshall, the only county quarterback who has thrown for more than 1,000 yards.

COUNTRYSIDE (4-2) AT TARPON SPRINGS (1-5)

LAST MEETING: Countryside 38, Tarpon 24 (2002).

THE SKINNY: Last year, the Cougars snapped a five-game losing streak against the Spongers that dated to 1991. For Countryside to make it two in a row, it needs one of its playmakers to have a big game. Two weeks ago, Jermaine Filer scored four touchdowns. Last week, Isaiah Gwyn scored four times. Tarpon Springs, meanwhile, has lost five in a row and is off to its worst start since 1969.

PALM HARBOR U. (2-4) AT GIBBS (2-4)

LAST MEETING: Gibbs 41, Palm Harbor U. 6 (2000).

THE SKINNY: The Gladiators defense should not have to worry about another collapse after a 27-3 lead disappeared in an overtime loss to East Lake last week. After all, Gibbs is playing the Hurricanes, who have scored a combined eight points in two losses the past two weeks.

Cotey: Gibbs Putnam: Gibbs Lee: PHU
