A punk hero's welcome

This weekend's Southeast Music Conference is the first of its kind in St. Petersburg, and it will debut in style: with punk icon John Doe as its headliner.

John Doe, co-founder of the legendary Los Angeles punk band X, is a hero and inspiration to many in the Tampa Bay area music scene. So imagine what a thrill and a coup it was for organizers of this weekend's Southeast Music Conference to nab Doe as its headlining performer.

Doe performs Friday at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg. (Drive-By Truckers were also on the bill, but they are no longer performing.)

The two-day conference, the first music industry conference in St. Petersburg, features entertainment open to the public. Forty local bands will perform at several venues within walking distance of one another in downtown St. Petersburg.
