PORT RICHEY - A Hudson man was in jail Saturday, accused of punching and kicking a 55-year-old woman as he stole her purse.

The robbery happened Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart at 8701 U.S. 19, police reported. Susana Delgado of New Port Richey had finished shopping and was putting things in her car.

Sean Patrick McGrath "ran up to her and knocked her to the ground," Lt. Bill Sager said. "He kicked her a couple of times, punched her face a couple of times and took her pocketbook."

Delgado provided police with McGrath's license plate number, which was used to track him down within hours near his home on White Pine Circle in Hudson, Sager said.

McGrath had his 2-year-old son in the car with him when police caught up to him, Sager said. Witnesses reported seeing a baby in the car at the time of the robbery. The purse contained less than 50 cents, Sager said, plus Delgado's driver's license, credit cards and other odds and ends. Police had not recovered it.

McGrath was being held in the county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail on a charge of strong-arm robbery.
