Selmon cautious after Big East meeting

TAMPA - South Florida athletic director Lee Roy Selmon was back in Tampa for USF's win over Charleston Southern on Saturday, a day after meeting with Big East officials in Newark, N.J.

Selmon and USF president Judy Genshaft met with Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese, among others. USF is a leading candidate to replace ACC-bound Boston College in the Big East.

"It was a good meeting. Nothing definitive came out of it," Selmon said. "It was a casual, exploratory meeting. We talked back and forth and shared information."

Selmon said no subsequent meetings have been scheduled. Big East presidents are expected to extend formal invitations Nov. 4.

TRICKERATION: Division I-AA CSU was overmatched but unafraid. Trailing 17-0 in the first quarter, the Buccaneers tried a fake punt from midfield and got the first down. Later in the drive CSU tried a halfback option pass that drew a pass-interference penalty. The drive ended on a botched short field goal.

RIGHT BACK AT YOU: The Bulls ran a fake punt early in the second quarter, and Clenton Crossley took it 58 yards to the Buccaneers 5. A penalty moved it to the 2, and Crossley carried it in for the score and a 24-0 lead. Last year, USF's Kawika Mitchell scored on a 56-yard fake punt vs. CSU.

BLAST OFF: The 34 first-half points tied for fifth-most in USF history and was its most since 1998.

A WEAKNESS!: Finally, something USF's do-it-all Brian Fisher doesn't do well. The Bulls lined up to go for it on fourth and 3 at the CSU 39 in the first quarter and Fisher, in the shotgun, took the snap and punted. The ball fluttered almost straight up and went for 15 yards.

GREEN DAY: The Bulls wore green jerseys and green pants for the first time this season.

ETC.: For the second straight game, and second time ever, BULLS was painted in the end zone. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whose name customarily occupies the end zone, are on the road for the second straight week. ... After drawing their two biggest crowds at Raymond James Stadium, 36,044 vs. Louisville and 33,368 vs. TCU, the Bulls drew 28,365. ... The spate of injuries at defensive end - reserves Jason Allen and Tommy Hunter each missed their third consecutive game - resulted in freshman Eric Thomas dressing out for the second straight game. Thomas has not played. ... Redshirt freshman quarterback Pat Julmiste made his second appearance, entering in the second quarter and guiding the Bulls to a touchdown. ... Reserve cornerback and special-teams standout Sidney Simpson left in the first half with a shoulder injury.
