NEW YORK - Eric Lindros and Tom Poti scored soft goals against Roberto Luongo to lead the Rangers to their first victory of the season, 3-1 over the Florida Panthers Monday night.

Lindros scored 1:41 in and Poti made it 2-0 with seven seconds left in the second period. Petr Nedved added an empty-net goal.

Lindros left the game with a left shoulder injury and was sent for X-rays before the third period. Results were not immediately announced, and a further evaluation was expected to be made today.

Lindros left Madison Square Garden without speaking to reporters.

Mike Dunham made 34 saves for New York, beaten only by Niklas Hagman 51 seconds into the third period.

Florida stretched its winless streak to five games (0-3-2) after a season-opening victory. Luongo was beaten twice on 27 shots after yielding only eight goals on 182 shots in his first five games.

ISLANDERS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 2: Mariusz Czerkawski scored twice to lead host New York, which has a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1-0). Jason Blake, Michael Peca and Oleg Kvasha added goals.

Garth Snow was in net for the Islanders for the first time since allowing six goals in less than two periods on opening night and stopped 24 shots.

The last time the Islanders won their first two regular-season home games was when they beat the Rangers and Philadelphia in 1992.

CANADIENS 2, RED WINGS 1: Steve Begin and Richard Zednik each scored a goal off nifty passing plays and backup goalie Mathieu Garon made 18 saves to lead host Montreal.

Mathieu Dandenault scored a short-handed goal for Detroit, which has lost two in a row after winning its first three.

Goalie Curtis Joseph, who has been on the trading block since Detroit reacquired Dominik Hasek, was assigned to the minor-league Grand Rapids Griffins before the game.

CANUCKS 6, SABRES 1: Rookie Jason King had a goal and two assists, and Dan Cloutier made 18 saves as Vancouver snapped a three-game winless skid and remained perfect in three games at home.

ISLANDERS: Center Dave Scatchard will miss four to six weeks after dislocating his right shoulder in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Panthers.
