Penalty for attacking elderly umpire: 250 hours of service to the elderly

BOCA RATON - A man pleaded guilty Monday to attacking an elderly umpire at a softball game.
Charles J. Mitchell, 35, avoided a trial on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated battery on 75-year-old Lester Barr by pleading guilty to misdemeanor battery.
Mitchell's sentence is to perform 250 hours of community service benefiting the elderly or infirm - Barr's idea.
The attack took place at a March 2002 coed softball game. Mitchell raged at Barr over a call, got ejected and attacked him, Coconut Creek police said.
Barr suffered a cracked kneecap and a shoulder injury and had to give up umpiring.
