In the pool and on the Net

District meets are filled with uncertainty.

Internally and externally.

Coaches never know what to expect from their squad or the others. Crystal River's Tim Holme not only tracks his swimmers, but does his best to follow the Pirates' Class A, District 5 opponents.

How?

"The newspaper," Holme said.

Still, results can be difficult to obtain. Crystal River has a Web site, where results from each meet are posted. But Holme said few programs do the same.

"Not much information makes it this far north," Holme said. "Nobody really has any Web sites that publish information that I know of except for me."

FAST COOKING: Lecanto freshman Taylor Cooke continues to impress and amaze. Cooke is one of the area's top cross country standouts and has put together a strong fall in the pool. She will run in one district meet Thursday and swim in another Saturday. She could reach state in both.

"She has been very surprising this season," Panthers coach Amber McLain said. "I knew she had talent, but she has really put things together. Her times have dropped significantly. She really works hard."

Cooke will compete in the 200-yard freestyle, 500 free, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. She caught a break when the cross country meet, originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved. Several other Panthers also compete in the two sports.

REPEAT PERFORMANCE: Four Pirates - Courtney Chandler, Chelsea Newberry, Aaron Washington and Matt Washington - are previous state qualifiers and Holme thinks each has a good shot to return.

Aaron Washington, a two-time qualifier in diving, recently set the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and school record. He also could qualify in the 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Sarah Bartley (100 free, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay) and Newberry (100 backstroke, 200 medley relay, 400 free relay) have the ability to advance in three events each, Holme said.

Senior Keri Boltin, a potential qualifier in diving, is Crystal River's most pleasant surprise. "She's just turned into an outstanding diver and swimmer," Holme said. "It's a shame she's a senior."

THE LECANTO FOUR: The Lecanto boys showed vast improvement this season and much of the credit goes to versatile swimmers Blake Hallowell, Scott Jackson, Andrew Norton and David Rundio. Rundio is a freshman. The others are seniors. Panthers coach Paul Brundage thinks each is capable of reaching state. "Especially in the relays," he said.
