PHCC's league mark a bonus

NEW PORT RICHEY - A Suncoast Conference title for Pasco-Hernando Community College's volleyball team has come to be expected.

Unbeaten conference records, however, are another story for a team that has won a conference title in each of its 13 seasons.

For the second time in coach Sam Cibrone's four seasons, the Conquistadors sported a 10-0 conference record.

"It was great, especially after being 8-2 the past two years," said Cibrone, whose four conference crowns match former coach Carol Kidman for most in school history.

"It was nice not to have a slipup."

PHCC, 29-6 overall, is ranked 11th in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll (posted Oct. 21).

The Conquistadors had been ranked as high as ninth before an Oct. 11 loss to Lake Land College (Ill.), the nation's seventh-ranked team.

The rankings are nice, Cibrone said, but will not mean much during the Florida Community College Activities Association State Tournament, Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at Brevard Community College in Titusville.

"It doesn't matter what your ranking is," Cibrone said, "you've still got to play in the tournament and Manatee (PHCC's first-round opponent) is a pretty good team."

Maybe so, but PHCC defeated Manatee in two of three meetings this season.

MOVING UP: The Saint Leo men's soccer team snapped a two-game skid with Saturday's 3-1 win against Florida Tech.

The Lions are tied with Florida Southern for fourth in the Sunshine State Conference at 5-8-2 overall, 2-2 in conference play.

Kyle Crawford (Land O'Lakes) and Robert Pollock (Hudson) each scored his second goal of the season against Florida Tech.

Tony Rosso, who assisted on Pollock's goal, netted his ninth goal to account for the final margin. Rosso leads the Lions with nine goals and 24 points.

TIME FOR A CHANCE: Saint Leo's women's soccer team also halted its two-game losing streak Tuesday at conference rival Eckerd. The Lions won 2-1.

At 10-4-1, 4-2 in the SSC, Saint Leo has posted the best record in the team's four-year history.

Casie Poyssick (Land O'Lakes) has had an immediate impact on the team.

The freshman forward, who scored both goals against the Tritons, is the nation's leading scorer in Division II with 24.

Sarah Wright is Saint Leo's second-leading scorer with 16 points on seven goals and two assists.
