Alafia River State Park is a place of many trails. The 5,400-acre park, in southeastern Hillsborough County, can be reached from County Road 39 in Lithia.
Hiking, equestrian and off-road bicycling trails meander through scrub and hardwood hammocks and along the Alafia River. Maps are available listing paved roads and trails, from easier to the most difficult for advanced mountain bike riders.
The park's campground is equipped with 30 sites and offers hot showers and electricity.
There's even a parking area for horse trailers.
A covered pavilion is available for picnicking, and there is a children's playground nearby.
Anglers trolling the river may snag a bass, panfish or catfish. Canoeing along this south prong of the river can make for a pleasant day.
Alafia River State Park was once a resource for phosphate and contains abandoned mine sites.
The park will host the Alafia Fat Tire Festival from Nov. 14 through 16. Registration is $65 per person and includes five meals and tent camping. Register by Nov. 1 by calling 689-5109.
