DUNEDIN - At least two people were injured late Friday when a runaway boat slammed into another boat carrying five people in the Gulf of Mexico near Dunedin, authorities said.
Coast Guard officers said two people were apparently riding in one boat and tried to pick up speed when they lost control.
The two were thrown overboard, but the boat kept going, crashing into another boat with five people, authorities said.
The first boat was believed to be 18 feet long; the second was a 24-foot vessel, authorities said.
By 11 p.m., all of the people were believed to have been rescued from the water, but authorities were continuing to search the area around the crash.
Further details of the accident were not known late Friday, including the names of those involved or the extent of the injuries.
One of the victims was transported to Bayfront Medical Center, the other to Mease Dunedin Hospital.
In addition to the Coast Guard, officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were investigating.
