DURHAM, N.C. - The day started rough for Tramain Hall. It ended with some clutch plays by North Carolina State's sophomore receiver.
Philip Rivers threw three touchdowns to Hall as the Wolfpack spoiled Ted Roof's coaching debut at Duke with a 28-21 victory on Saturday.
Hall was tight when he arrived at Wallace Wade Stadium and had to be stretched out numerous times before the game. Hall then injured his ankle on the second play.
"When I first rolled my ankle I thought I was done, that maybe this wasn't going to be my day," said Hall, who caught eight passes for 142 yards.
But when fellow receiver Richard Washington was lost with two broken ribs, Hall returned as N.C. State won its 10th straight against the Blue Devils, who have lost 30 in a row in the ACC.
Duke had a touchdown and field goal in less than a minute late in the fourth. But the Blue Devils failed to score after getting the ball back deep in their territory with 53 seconds and no timeouts left.
CLEMSON 36, UNC 28: Derrick Hamilton caught a 69-yard TD pass, then put host Clemson ahead for good with a 100-yard kickoff return. His second career kickoff return TD came at the right time for the Tigers, who trailed 28-23 after Darian Durant's 63-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Hamilton's run re-energized the Tigers. They got the last of three interceptions on North Carolina's next drive and kept the Tar Heels out of the end zone the rest of the way. Hamilton also had 102 yards on three catches.
VIRGINIA 24, TROY ST. 0: Alvin Pearman ran for a career-high 138 yards and two TDs for the host Cavaliers. Pearman carried 32 times against the Trojans, scoring on runs of 7 and 5 yards, and added eight receptions for 51 yards. The Cavaliers had 20 first downs and a 24-0 lead by halftime, then let the defense finish off Troy State.
