Daily fishing report

Team Bluerunner caught a 31.68-pound king mackerel Saturday to win the Rotary Club of Seminole Kingfish Tournament, the halfway point of the fall's tournament schedule.

Bluerunner won the $3,000 prize, beating 51 other boats in the tournament at Gators Cafe and Saloon at Treasure Island.

Fishboy put the heat on Bluerunner with a 29.84-pound fish, and Get er' Done brought a 29.44-pound fish to the scales.

It was the third time in his past four tournaments Fishboy crew member Brian Hasson finished in the prize money.

Most of the large kings weighed were fooled by live blue runners, one of the largest baits available to mackerel anglers. This early in the fall season, many anglers work according to the motto that big baits catch big fish, and it proved true Saturday.

"Every fish caught in the tournament was taken on blue runners except for two. The other two were caught on a mullet and a cigar minnow," tournament director and fishing guide Larry Hoffman said. "The fish are definitely in."

The migration appears to be picking up, as fish flee chilling waters of the northern gulf. Kings typically migrate north along the coast off St. Petersburg in the spring and south in the fall.

The largest push of fish is expected in the next few weeks. With tournaments planned each weekend for a month, the size of winning fish is expected to grow. Fish should be available close to the beach as well as over hard bottom and artificial reefs in deeper water.
