GULFPORT - The old Bay Machine building has been flattened and the property cleared. At 9 a.m. Tuesday, the city will break ground for the Gulfport Neighborhood Center at 1617 49th St. S.
The new building is the second piece in the town's 49th Street Corridor Redevelopment Project.
Earlier this summer, streetscaping was completed between Tangerine and 20th avenues S. A grant from the Florida Department of Transportation paid the $120,000 cost.
Susanne Hicks, Gulfport's principal planner, said the center will include a multipurpose room, offices for the code enforcement department and a police substation. Behind the building will be a wash pad and storage bay for city garbage trucks, which then can be moved out of the residential area around the public works building.
The building and land will cost $670,000. Community Development Block Grants are paying $400,000.
