ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan's complete performance kept its Big Ten title hopes alive.
John Navarre threw two touchdowns to Braylon Edwards and the Wolverines shut down Purdue's passing game in a 31-3 win Saturday that moved them into second in the league.
"We know to win the Big Ten, we have to win the rest of our games," Edwards said.
The Wolverines took control with two first-quarter TDs and denied the Boilermakers their first win at Michigan since 1966.
The result sets up Michigan's game Saturday at No.11 Michigan State that has more than just local interest. Purdue's loss left the Spartans as the lone unbeaten in conference play.
Markus Curry's 2-yard fumble return put Michigan ahead 28-3 early in the fourth quarter.
"I'm not stunned," Purdue coach Joe Tiller said. "I felt that this was the most talented team in the league."
N'WESTERN 16, WISCONSIN 7: Noah Herron rushed for 104 yards, including a fake field goal on fourth and 6 for the host Wildcats.
With Northwestern up 9-7 in the third quarter, Eric Batis took the snap, slipped the ball between the legs of Herron and ran left with blockers. Herron stood still for a couple of counts, then ran right for a 20-yard gain and a first down to the 3.
"We ran it a few times in my career. It's probably out the window now." Wildcats coach Randy Walker said of the fake. "You can only dust it off every few years."
Jason Wright scored two plays later to give Northwestern a 16-7 lead. He also caught a 53-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
IOWA 26, PENN ST. 14: The host Hawkeyes returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the third quarter and used a long fumble return to set up another score. The Nittany Lions were held to 167 yards and nine first downs. After throwing two first-quarter interceptions to Yaacov Yisrael, Iowa's Nathan Chandler settled down. He threw two TDs in the second quarter and scored in the third on a 1-yard dive, giving Iowa a 26-7 lead.
OHIO ST. 35, INDIANA 6: Gaither High graduate Lydell Ross rushed for a career-high 167 yards and scored three touchdowns, backup receiver Santonio Holmes caught two TDs and the visiting Buckeyes even had the crowd on their side. The Buckeyes, 114th of 117 Division I-A schools in offense coming in, gained 603 yards, their most since 1986 when they had 715 against Utah. More than half of the sold-out crowd in Bloomington wore OSU's scarlet and gray.
MINNESOTA 36, ILLINOIS 10: Laurence Maroney ran for 179 yards and two scores and Asad Abdul-Khaliq threw three touchdowns for the visiting Golden Gophers, who gained 575 total yards. The Gophers have had only one game under 400 this season. Abdul-Khaliq's 80-yard touchdown to Aaron Hosack put Minnesota up 17-0 with 12:28 left in the first half.
