AHEAD OF THEMSELVES?: Word got out Saturday that South Florida officials have planned a three-part celebration for Tuesday, though they covered themselves by saying the parades would go off whether the Marlins are champs or not.
There will be two street parades through downtown Miami starting at 11 a.m., then another through Little Havana starting at 1:30 and a boat parade in Fort Lauderdale at 4:30.
"I think they'll win, and we can safely plan these events," Miami Mayor Manny Diaz said. "Even if we are unlucky and we lose both games in New York, the team is already a champion as far as I'm concerned."
Wasn't it just over a week ago that the Red Sox were painting the World Series logo on the grass at Fenway Park?
PRESSURE? WHAT PRESSURE?: Not to suggest that the New York tabloids are putting too much pressure on the Yankees, but the front page of the Daily News Saturday was headlined:
"NOW WIN!
Hey, you're the best team money can buy ...
... so it's time to prove you're worth it"
On the inside were pictures of Yankees stars such as Jason Giambi and Derek Jeter with their salaries attached as price tags.
New York Post baseball writer Joel Sherman, meanwhile, writes, "The Yankees are not only behind in the World Series now, they feel a few games back in the 2004 standings already."
COSTUME PARTY: Seems New York Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch has a pretty good sense of humor. Leetch, according to the Post, went to the team's Halloween party at a New York bar dressed as Pedro Martinez, and his wife, Beth, was Don Zimmer.
CELEB WATCH: Yankees Hall of Famers Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford threw out the ceremonial first pitches, again. ... The U.S. Military Academy band performed the national anthem. ... Actors Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Alyssa Milano, Billy Crystal, Peter Falk, Richard Gere and Wilmer Valderrama, filmmaker Spike Lee, TV anchorman Dan Rather, tennis player John McEnroe and rapper Jay-Z were among those in the crowd.
