Golf: Chrysler Championship Preview

Players of the year

By Times Staff
Published October 29, 2003

Tiger Woods

PGA TOUR VICTORIES: 5

MAJORS: 0

STARTS: 17

CUTS: 17

MONEY: $6,577,413 (2nd)

STROKE AVERAGE: 68.19. (1st)

ROS: This is a career year for just about any other player. He leads the tour in victories and scoring average and is second in money while playing less than any of the contenders.

CONS: He has won the award the past four years, which will make it easier to pass him over because he didn't win a major.

Vijay Singh

PGA TOUR VICTORIES: 4

MAJORS: 0

STARTS: 25

CUTS: 24

MONEY: $6,827,507 (1st)

STROKE AVERAGE: 68.65 (2nd)

PROS: One of the game's most relentless workers has four victories and 15 top-10 finishes, despite missing time early in the season with a rib injury. He tied for sixth at the Masters and tied for second at the British Open.

CONS: You can say he should have won more and it's hard hard to forget that he had the British Open in his grasp. Singh also played more than the other contenders, padding his numbers.

Mike Weir

PGA TOUR VICTORIES: 3

MAJORS: 1 (Masters)

STARTS: 19

CUTS: 18

MONEY: $4,716,410 (5th)

STROKE AVERAGE: 68.82 (4th)

PROS: His playoff victory at the Masters and two other top-10 finishes in the majors makes him a strong contender if the most important tournaments get more weight. He also has 10 top-10 finishes.

CONS: Weir has no victories since the Masters, and going six months without a win is a long stretch.

Jim Furyk

PGA TOUR VICTORIES: 2

MAJORS: 1 (U.S. Open)

STARTS: 25

CUTS: 23

MONEY: $4,990,865 (4th)

STROKE AVERAGE: 69.06 (5th)

PROS: His win at the U.S. Open elevated him into another class of player, and another win at the Buick Open gave him two victories in the same year for the first time. He has a whopping 10 top-5 finishes.

CONS: Furyk has the least number of victories of all the contenders and is skipping this week. He needs a victory at the Tour Championship and even that might not be enough.

Davis Love

PGA TOUR VICTORIES: 4

MAJORS: 0

STARTS: 20

CUTS: 17

MONEY: $5,693,096 (3rd)

STROKE AVERAGE: 69.44 (7th)

PROS: His closing 64 and victory at the Players Championship is as close to a major victory as it gets. He also tied for fourth at the British Open and is tied for the second-most victories of any player.

CONS: Love missed cuts in two of the four majors, the worst showing of any of the contenders.

Kenny Perry

PGA TOUR VICTORIES: 3

MAJORS: 0

STARTS: 24

CUTS: 22

MONEY: $4,173,661 (6th)

STROKE AVERAGE: 69.53 (8th)

PROS: Had one of the best stretches of his career this summer, finishing in the top 10 in eight consecutive tournaments, including his three victories.

CONS: Although Perry had three top 10s in majors, he was never a factor in any of them on Sunday and has done little since the PGA.
