TAMPA PALMS - Temple Ohev Shalom, New Tampa's only synagogue, broke ground Wednesday on its 3,565-square-foot home on Tampa Palms Boulevard. The $250,000 project, scheduled for completion by next fall, will contain a multipurpose room, a children's room, a kitchen and office space, said Helene Geller, the synagogue's treasurer. In later phases, the 35-family synagogue hopes to add a banquet hall and a school, Geller said.

Currently, the synagogue's Shabbat services are held on the second and fourth Fridays at 7:15 p.m. in Tampa Palms' Compton Park. Sunday school is held there 9-11:30 a.m. every Sunday.

Fundraiser will benefit strays

TOWN 'N COUNTRY - If you want to help raise money for homeless pets and get some exercise while you're doing it, then you'll want to join "Stride for Strays" on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at Upper Tampa Bay Park.

The leisurely 1-mile walk and event at 8101 Double Branch Road includes booths, games and contests - and, of course, your dog is invited.

The event is sponsored by No More Homeless Pets in Hillsborough County and ACT - nonprofit organizations working to end euthanasia of homeless animals in the county.

Stride for Strays is the largest event for the two groups and helps change the lives of thousands of homeless pets.

Registration starts at 8 a.m; the walk, 9:15.

After the walk, activities, contests, booths and entertainment continue into the afternoon. Activities include obedience training, a Frisbee competition, education booths, face painting and a dog wash.

There's also an enclosed playground for your dog within the main event area, as well as shaded seating, food and drinks.

Community center awarded $10,000

UNIVERSITY NORTH - Thanks to a grant from the DeBartolo Family Foundation and Bright House Networks, the University Area Community Center has $10,000 more to spend on programs for local families and kids.

The money comes with a Spirit of Humanity Award that both organizations presented to the center Tuesday morning.
