Warrant issued for shooting suspect

LARGO - Investigators have obtained a warrant for a man suspected of shooting two people outside a Largo nightclub early Wednesday morning. The warrant charges Eric T. Carter, 32, with attempted second-degree murder in connection with the shooting in the parking lot of the Coliseum just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. Largo police Lt. Michelle Smith said detectives spent Thursday searching for Carter in the St. Petersburg area, but did not find him. Police said Carter fired five shots at a crowd of people who were exiting the nightclub. He allegedly fired the shots because his girlfriend was in a fight with another group of people, police said. Octavius Henderson, 23, and Tracy S. Lancaster, 29, both of St. Petersburg, were shot. Both were innocent bystanders leaving the club. Both suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Car battery blamed for Wal-Mart evacuation

LARGO - A leaking car battery left near an air-conditioning vent is the culprit that caused the evacuation of the Largo Wal-Mart late Wednesday. The store at 1111 Missouri Ave. N was evacuated about 10 p.m. after some employees felt some irritation. Firefighters determined that sulfuric acid leaked from the old car battery, said Deputy Chief Jeff Bullock of the Largo Fire Department. Wal-Mart spokeswoman Suzanne Haney said no one was injured or taken to the hospital. She said the store reopened about 11:30 p.m. Haney said Wal-Mart accepts old car batteries at its courtesy desk to be disposed of properly.
