A closer look: One Hillsborough church

Hillsdale Baptist Church

LOCATION: Alonso High School, 8302 Montague St., Tampa (Sunday services); 5800 N Church St., Tampa (mid week services); its future site (March 2004) is under construction on Ehrlich Road near the Veterans Expressway. 884-8250.

SERVICES: Worship services at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Bible study at 9:15 a.m. Sundays. Mid week services at 7 p.m.

LEADERSHIP: Dr. Travis D. Smith, pastor.

HISTORY: Hillsdale Baptist Church was planted in 1962 from the former Buffalo Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Bowe serving as pastor. The Rev. Alan Bradshaw was called in 1965 to pastor the church. Up through the 1980s, a number of building projects were completed on the corner of Henry and Church avenues, producing nearly 60,000 square feet of space. In June 1995, -the Rev. Bradshaw died of a heart attack. The Rev. Robert Smith, who had served as youth pastor for 10 years, became the senior pastor in October 1995.

MEMBERSHIP: 400

COMMUNITY OUTREACH: The church has a Men of Praise Outreach, Morning Break and Professional Women Together Ministries, InsideOut Teens Program, Frontline Clubs for Kids and PrimeTimers Ministry for Seniors.

NOTABLE: The church is taking registration for Hillsdale Fine Arts Academy and soon will enroll students for preschool kindergarten for 2004.
