TAMPA - Two Tampa police officers are under investigation as possible clients of a man who was arrested Thursday on charges of dispensing illegal, muscle-building steroids.
The Police Department confirmed the investigation Monday evening but did not release the officers' names.
"Yes, we are conducting an investigation," said police spokesman Joe Durkin. "It is an internal affairs investigation. Nobody has been relieved of duty.
"We're not going to discuss it further at this point."
John Todd Miller, 35, of Wesley Chapel, was arrested Thursday after a month of surveillance by local authorities. Investigators said Miller had been running an illegal dispensary for the steroids out of his makeshift doctor's office at 1931-B W Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Officials said Miller gave patients regular injections of testosterone for about $100 per injection. Only doctors may prescribe the use of testosterone, a male hormone often used by athletes to increase muscle size.
Miller now faces 14 felony charges, including running an unlicensed medical practice, possession of a controlled substance and delivery of a controlled substance.
Authorities said Miller's client list included about 100 people, including "very recognizable" local professional wrestlers, businessmen and law enforcement officers. So far, investigators have not identified any clients, though they did seize documents listing their names.
State records show that Miller has three previous arrests in Florida, dating back to a 1987 burglary charge in Sanford. He was arrested in Hernando County in 1999 on charges of DUI with property damage, and again in Hillsborough County in 2000 on a DUI charge.
Jail records show Miller was released Friday morning after posting $33,000 bail.
