School Board votes to buy sinkhole land for divers

LAND O'LAKES - A Hudson sinkhole will soon become the domain of a cave diving group interested in preserving and studying underground river systems.
The Pasco County School Board on Tuesday voted 5-0 to move ahead with plans to jointly purchase close to 5 acres of land behind Hudson Elementary along with the National Speleological Society.
Currently owned by Russell Taylor and Linda Lee Lowe, the land contains access to School Sink, a sinkhole that leads to an extensive river system that runs beneath Beacon Woods subdivision. The water system is one of many featured in Water's Journey: The Hidden Rivers of Florida, a documentary currently airing nationally on PBS.
Under the terms of the $45,000 deal, the School Board will buy 3.75 acres and the Speleological Society's Cave Diving Section will purchase 1 acre, with each acre costing $9,464.
