COCOA - Brevard County voters on Tuesday rejected a proposal to add a penny sales tax to benefit schools and roads.

Complete but unofficial returns showed 60,796 votes, or about 65 percent, against the tax and 32,728, or about 35 percent, for it.

Proponents said the surtax would generate $1.3-billion over the next 20 years. Opponents argued the tax was unnecessary.
