School brief: Kids in Ybor area get a school closer to home

By Times Staff Writer

HISTORIC YBOR - Elementary school children who live in the Ybor area but are bused to schools in Brandon will have a closer option next year.

The Hillsborough County School Board on Tuesday night set the boundaries for Booker T. Washington, on Estelle Street, which will open as a neighborhood elementary school after renovations.

More than 650 children in the area currently ride buses to Kingswood, Lithia Springs, Seffner and Valrico elementaries to add racial diversity to the mostly white schools.

These children will have the option to stay at their current schools or switch to Washington.
