Deputy indicted in inmate's death

FORT LAUDERDALE - A Broward County grand jury has indicted a sheriff's deputy on a manslaughter charge in the death of an inmate on a work detail.

Deputy Frank Iovino was supervising a crew of three inmates when Charlie Osborne, 62, lost his grip while riding a dump truck running board at nearly 50 mph March 12.

The back wheels ran over both of Osborne's legs. He was due to be released five days later from his cocaine possession sentence.

Iovino, 59, a 20-year veteran who retired after Osborne's death, had pulled from the shoulder onto the road, sped up and started to pass a sheriff's pickup, investigators reported.

Iovino said he allowed inmates to stand on running boards when traveling short distances - in violation of department policies. He also offered four varying accounts on Osborne's death.

Internal investigators concluded that Iovino and community service aide Jessie Thompson violated county rules by initially giving false information to detectives and not guaranteeing inmates were wearing seat belts. A trial is scheduled to start Dec. 15.
