Stormy weather elsewhere
By Wire services
Published November 14, 2003
Deadly windstorms gusting to more than 70 mph swept across the Midwest and the East Wednesday and Thursday, knocking out power to nearly a million customers.
WEST VIRGINIA: In Loudendale, more than 4 inches of rain fell, enough to carry away a 3,000-gallon kerosene tank. Flooding was widespread, and a motorist who drove past a roadblock was swept away by a creek. More than 100 students were stuck in shelters past midnight in Lincoln County.
NEW YORK: New York City-area airports had flight delays of up to three hours and a tree fell on a car in Victor, outside Rochester, killing the driver.
MICHIGAN: More than 330,000 customers lost power. Scores of school districts canceled classes, and a live power line fell across Interstate 94 near the Detroit airport, creating a large traffic jam.
OHIO: Seven people were injured in Wooster when a tornado damaged a Rubbermaid plant. Waves of up to 16 feet were recorded on Lake Erie.
NEW JERSEY: Wind-whipped flames gutted most of a 42-unit apartment complex in Newark, N.J., leaving up to 80 people homeless.
