Florida students from kindergarten through 12th grade can participate in a Black History Month essay contest. The topic is "What Impact Has an African-American Entertainer, Singer, Dancer, Director or Actor from Florida Had on My Life."

A panel of educators and community and business leaders from around the state will serve as judges for the contest. They will choose one winner from each of the grade level categories: elementary school, middle school and high school.

Winners will attend a Black History Month reception at the Governor's Mansion and will receive a four-year tuition scholarship to a state college or university.

Entries may be e-mailed to blackhistoryessay@myflorida.com or mailed to the Governor's Press Office, 206 the Capitol, Tallahassee, FL 32399. One essay per student will be accepted, no longer than 500 words. It must include: address, telephone number, school attended, grade level and title of essay.

The deadline is 5 p.m. on Jan. 5.

For additional information and guidelines, call 850 488-5394 or check the Web site at www.myflorida.com/myflorida/governorsoffice/black_history/essay.html
