A message underscored

Published November 16, 2003

Re: Where is our love of learning?, by Bill Maxwell.

Bill Maxwell again demonstrates qualities of perseverance and hope in his column. For more than 30 years, I have been aware of messages that provide the same recipe for progress: "Attend class, earn good grades and score high on standardized examinations."

Others would have us believe that the politicians hold the key to a brighter future for black children. By repeating the recipe again, Maxwell reminds us of a more promising, simpler path to progress.

Likewise, his observation that "our churches - because of their power to influence - should lead the way" has been around for at least the past 30 years. I often wonder if this message really has a chance of changing what churches do. Maxwell's (and the St. Petersburg Times') persistence in delivering the message suggests that someone hopes the churches will eventually get it.
