The president stands tall

Published November 16, 2003

Re: Filling a suit isn't enough any more, Robyn Blumner's column of Nov. 9.

Robyn Blumner and her ilk try to portray President Bush as a bumbling fool having a shallow, one-dimensional understanding of issues. I offer these rebuttals to her unfounded assertions attacking our president:

1. President Bush was elected by the people of the United States, not by her "right-wing ideologues and oligarchs." Like most of the lefties, she cannot get over the 2000 election!

2. President Bush has credibility with the American people because of his personal integrity and demonstrated leadership abilities. He is guided by principle rather than polls and focus groups. I believe that most of us view him as having a very clear grasp of the total picture with the vision and courage needed to make hard decisions in the best interests of our country.

3. Despite the insistence that the war in Iraq is going badly, the overall picture is clearly that it is going very well and much progress is being made. The media focus almost completely on the negative aspects of any situation. Although every war death is regrettable, the number of casualties is very small. I can see no good purpose being served by allowing photographs of caskets, missing limbs and other disfigurements as Blumner would like to see. Our troops and our nation's leadership need and deserve our support - not the continual whining and misguided criticism from the left that gives aid and comfort to the enemy.

4. President Bush has spoken very clearly and persuasively about the direction of the conflict in Iraq. He told the American people from the beginning that the war would not be easy or short but that we will prevail. That is exactly what is happening.

5. The "tax cuts for the rich" seem to be working, even for the not-so-rich. It's amusing to see the long faces on the Democrats since the economy seems to be picking up. They can always find some aspect of the picture that can be criticized - good news is bad news for them!

President Bush is filling out his suit very well, in my opinion. He still has my support and that of the majority of the nation - in spite of the incessant attacks by the liberal press and the nine "wannabe" Democratic contenders. Some of the campaign rhetoric borders on treason and I think (and hope) it's going to backfire on them. George Bush stands head and shoulders above them all.
