ST. LEO - The Haitian Education Project at Saint Leo University is holding a fundraising dinner at 7 p.m. today celebrating the 200th anniversary of the battle of Vertiere, Haiti's last battle for independence from the French.
The Haitian Education Project is a nonprofit organization supporting educational opportunities to increase the economic and social status of the Haitian people.
The donation to attend the dinner is $50 per plate, with proceeds going toward building libraries in Haiti. Three speakers will address the famous battle and how it reshaped European influence in the Western Hemisphere. Speakers at the dinner include Dr. Marco Rimanelli, director of the Center of Inter-American and World Studies and associate professor of political science at Saint Leo University; Dr. Paultre P. Desrosiers, public health physician and cultural anthropologist, who is actively researching in Africa and Haiti; and Dr. Fritz Daguillard, author and Haitian-American physician developing artistic and cultural activities in black history. Daguillard is author of A la Decouverte des Dumas (Toward Discovery of the Dumas); Journey Towards Freedom: A Bicentennial Celebration of the Haitian Revolution; and A Jewel in the Crown: Charles Sumner and the Struggle for Haiti's Recognition.
