OTTAWA - J.P. Dumont and James Patrick scored 14 seconds apart early in the third and Martin Biron made 23 saves in the Sabres' 2-1 victory over the Senators on Monday.
Dumont scored from the slot 1:52 into the third to break a scoreless tie, and Patrick added his third of the season at 2:06.
Defenseman Wade Redden scored for the third straight game, pulling the Senators within one with a power-play goal at 4:10. Ottawa's past eight goals have come with the man advantage, including a team-record five Thursday against Columbus.
Buffalo ended a three-game winless streak. Ottawa, which fell to 0-6 in one-goal games, lost its second in a row and is 2-5-2 since winning five of its first seven.
LEMIEUX STILL OUT: Mario Lemieux will miss at least three more games with an injured right hip that has sidelined him for more than two weeks. Coach Eddie Olczyk said the best scenario is that Lemieux returns Nov. 26 against Philadelphia.
VETERAN WING RETIRES: Hurricanes wing Jeff Daniels, one of the most respected players in the Carolina locker room, retired after a 12-season career. Daniels was a member of the 1991-92 Penguins team that won the Stanley Cup.
DALLAS-CHICAGO TRADE: The Stars acquired Jon Klemm from the Blackhawks, hoping he can improve a porous defense and help a team on a six-game winless streak. Dallas gave up Stephane Robidas and a second-round pick in next year's draft for Klemm and a fourth-rounder.
AVALANCHE: Forward Paul Kariya is out indefinitely with a wrist injury, and center Peter Forsberg will miss tonight's game against Anaheim because of a groin injury.
OILERS: Center Adam Oates, 41, returned to the NHL, signing a one-year, $1.95-million contract.
RANGERS: Captain Mark Messier left little doubt that he intends to play for a team of former Oilers stars against a team of former Canadiens in an old-timers game Saturday.
THRASHERS: Team president Stan Kasten, also president of Atlanta's Braves and Hawks, left all three teams amid the decision by Time Warner to sell them. Kasten said he might offer to return to management of the NBA's Hawks and Thrashers once a pending deal was approved. A group led by Boston businessman Steve Belkin reached a deal in September to purchase the Hawks, Thrashers and Philips Arena for $250-million. The deal is expected to be approved within the next month.
Lightning sends Rumble to AHL
TAMPA - The Lightning assigned defenseman Darren Rumble to AHL Hershey for a two-game conditioning assignment. Tampa Bay said he will be recalled for Saturday's game with the Sabres.
Rumble, 34, signed during the summer as a free agent, has been a healthy scratch in 13 of 14 games. Coach John Tortorella said no player will be called up to take Rumble's spot, meaning Tampa Bay will carry six defensemen. He said Rumble can be recalled immediately in an emergency.
In other news, minor-league right wing Nikita Alexeev had surgery to repair his dislocated left shoulder performed by team physician Ira Guttentag. Team spokesman Jay Preble said the prognosis of a full recovery and a return in four to six months remains the same.
