LONDON - Roger Short, a career diplomat who served as British consul general in Turkey since 2001, was among more than two dozen people killed Thursday by truck bombers in Istanbul. He was 58.

Speaking of Mr. Short as "one of my best friends," the Rev. Ian Sherwood, chaplain at the consulate, told British Broadcasting Corp. that "he was one of these characters that a lot of people knew. His life was his career."

Mr. Short served as Britain's ambassador to Bulgaria from 1994 to 1998 and worked at the Office of the High Representative, the civilian organization that oversees peace-building in Bosnia-Herzegovina, from 1999 to 2000.

He is survived by his wife, their son and two daughters.
