WASHINGTON - Lawmakers fashioning a spending bill to fund dozens of government agencies remained deadlocked Thursday over whether to block President Bush from moving ahead with new rules for overtime pay.
The House and Senate passed separate temporary funding bills that would have to be reconciled Friday to keep the government agencies running while negotiators search for a solution. Critics of the proposed overtime rules say it could jeopardize overtime paid to more than 8-million employees.
The administration says the proposal is a badly needed revision of rules that are vague and outdated.
Negotiators said the House cannot accept a bill that blocks Bush's orders, while the Senate cannot pass a bill that lets them go forward.
