The return of the pocket square

By wire services
Published November 22, 2003

It comes and goes with the regularity of, say, yellow ties and cuffed trousers.

But now - drum roll - the silk pocket square is back on men's well-dressed chests.

Newsweek magazine noted recently, pocket squares are showing up on Ralph Lauren's Purple Label ads as well as on TV's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. They call it the new power tie.

It's one way to spruce up your old suit. Just don't make it look too square and fixed. And don't even think about wearing a tie that matches.

From big to small

Women have grown accustomed to strappy tote bags spacious enough to carry lunch, a cell phone, an organizer, a housing contract and enough makeup to see them through a disco party.

But times change, and with the apparel industry nudging fashion-conscious women into more grownup, dressy clothes this fall, the petite clutch bag is back in the lineup.

But will a bag that holds little more than a credit card and lipstick fly for daily life?

Just throw the clutch into the big tote.
