Pasco County leads all-district list

Pasco County made a strong showing in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association's all-district honors, nearly swept the awards from a five-county area.

Land O'Lakes senior quarterback Drew Weatherford earned District MVP honors, was selected as the all-district quarterback and named - with Pasco receiver Johnny Peyton - as the district's top two offensive players.

Zephyrhills linemen Daniel Cerf was the only player selected to the team on offense and defense and was also one of two players honored as the district's top defensive players.

Wesley Chapel coach John Castelamare was nominated to join the coaching staff for this year's FACA postseason all-star game.

Castelamare, who led the Wildcats to their second undefeated regular season in three years, said the honor is something he will share with varsity assistant coaches Brian Colding, Tony Lister, Tom McHugh and George Wortley.

"It should be the whole coaching staff," Castelamare said. "The honor is great, and I'm happy, but the whole bunch should be there."

Wesley Chapel led the county contingent with three players: center Seth Fabin, defensive end Chuck Amerson and punter Gabriel Montelongo. In addition to Weatherford and Cerf, the county had two other all-district selections in Pasco running back Donte O'Neal and Peyton.

The county had a similarly strong showing last year, when the FACA gave separate honors for Class 4A and 3A. Land O'Lakes coach John Benedetto and Zephyrhills' Tom Fisher earned the coaching honors, while the Gators' Logan Payne and Wesley Chapel's Tyrone Tomlin were the district players of the year for their respective classes. Pasco County accounted for 13 of the 24 all-district selections last year. There were eight this year.

Weatherford and Central kicker Mike Hibbert were the only second-time all-district selection from the county this season.
